ESTA travel authorizations are valid from 2 years from the issuing date or until the passport expires, for example, let’s say you have applied and got approved on January 1st 2015 and your passport expires on December 1st 2015, even your ESTA travel authorization should expire on Janaury 1st 2017, the system will only issue your ESTA valid until your passport expiration date which, in this case scenario is December 1st 2015.
A traveler can visit the United States multiple times with the same approved ESTA, however if the traveler is not sure about the issuing and expiration date of the current approved ESTA it is better to renew your ESTA before travelling, just for peace of mind.
Also, a traveler do not need to wait until the ESTA expires to renew. Traveler may do so at any time before the trip, on or after the expiration date of the existing ESTA. Submitting an ESTA renewal application will require payment for this application renewal and will then cancel the existing one.
