Peru to be included in the US. Visa Waiver Progam

In May 2014, the Government of Peru began a consultation process with the United States for the country to be included into the Visa Waiver Program.

The United States and Peru are already working on the necessary agreements for Peruvians traveling to American territory under the Visa Waiver Program, according to the Peruvian Foreign Minister; Gonzalo Gutierrez.

The agreement will allow Peruvians to “enter expeditiously by aerial migration points” to the United States, Gutierrez explained in a telephone interview with Efe.

The “Global Entry” program establishes a system of prior approval of certain travelers as low risk, you have the option of avoiding the regular immigration controls in place and proceed to the automated kiosks, which can reduce waiting times.

The Peruvian chancellor, visited Washington, and said to the press that this is a process that “involves the refinement of certain flows of information” between the two countries, but that is already underway.

“We are analyzing it,  but we still have two or three additional stages,” said the chancellor.

Currently, US officials dismiss about 16% of visa applications presented by Peruvians, when the maximum permissible to enter the Visa Waiver Program to the US (Visa Waiver Program) percentage is 3%.

On 27 February, the plenary of the European Parliament (EP) adopted by a large majority the visa waiver for stays of up to three months in the territory of the European Union to the citizens of Colombia and Peru.

The chancellor said he expects the agreement with the United States is signed “within months” and that “sometime next year” can enter into the Visa Waiver Program, having Peruvian citizens to apply online for an ESTA travel authorization for admission to the United States instead of of the large process that implies aplying for a regular non inmigrant visa..

The US has granted so far the Visa Waiver Program to 37 countries, mostly European, and last February, Chile became the first Latin American nation to join the course. EFE
